Exercise and Sport Psychology Internship Information

To provide students with the most up-to-date information regarding internships in sport psychology, Dr. Shelly Wiechman, former student representative for AASP, and Glenn Pfenninger, M.S., APA Division 47 student representative 2007-2009, compiled the following list of sport psychology internships. These are places where opportunities exist for working with athletes, though such work may not be the major focus of the training. For more information on the opportunities that exist, you should call the specific site that interests you and speak with the staff.

Internship Opportunity: University of Florida

The University of Florida Counseling Center is seeking a recent graduated professional to fill a one year, post-doctoral position. The position is available beginning August 18, 2008. This position is funded by the University Athletic Association and through the Counseling Center with primary reporting responsibility to the Counseling Center. The Counseling Center provides service to University of Florida students and consultation to the campus community.

This residency provides a recent graduate with supervision of direct service provision required to accumulate the number of supervised hours of practice needed for application for licensure as a professional psychologist or mental health counselor, culminating in full certification as an independently functioning clinician. The successful candidate in this position will participate in a variety of supervised activities, representing a wide breadth of services offered in the university counseling center setting, which includes: direct service within the counseling center and with UAA clients, indirect clinical service, psychological assessment, psycho-educational outreach programming, consultation with UAA coaches, trainers, and advisors, crisis intervention, consultation with the university community, staff planning and coordination meetings, and professional development. Must have an understanding of and commitment to diversity issues in the delivery and management of clinical services. Strong interpersonal skills, a solid understanding of effective crisis response and management; the ability to work collaboratively with students, parents, faculty, staff and administrators; strong in team building, written and oral communication skills. Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor on record.

Qualifications required:

The successful candidate should hold a doctoral degree in counseling or clinical psychology or counseling related field and be licensed eligible as a psychologist or mental health professional. One-year pre-doctoral internship in professional psychology, preferably in a university counseling center setting. Direct course work and experience working with counseling and clinical interventions with student athletes. We are especially interested in candidates who have successfully demonstrated a commitment and interest in working with athletes and students of color and from marginalized backgrounds.

UF Counseling Center
The University of Florida Counseling Center has 14.5 FTE clinical faculty, seven FTE support staff, two Post Doctoral Associates, and an APA internship program with five full-time interns. In addition, the Counseling Center provides practicum and internship rotations for approximately 15 graduate students in Counseling Psychology and Counselor Education programs. The Center's staff and faculty are committed to promoting diversity and infusing multicultural awareness into campus structures and programs.
